Those Who Choose Bullets Over Words

The gunman who shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords through the skull, wounded 11 others and killed 6, chose bullets over words.

This is the tragic culmination of a growing trend of insults, vandalism, personal threats and potential threats of armed revolt (from some Republican candidates). Culmination… Let us pray that this is the culmination and not just another stage in an ongoing escalation. But I don’t mean to make light of what happened to Giffords and the others in Tucson. Not at all.

An article worth reading (if you haven't already):
"Bloodshed Puts New Focus on Vitriol in Politics" (NYT)

I just found out that the 16-year old boy who lives down the hall from me was stabbed to death last night by gang members. The gang members crashed a party he was at. He and a girl chased them out. Outside they murdered him. Something's rotten in the state of America. I don't have the words...

This article in the “Wall Street Journal” provides an account of what happened to my young neighbor. His name, by the way, was Adonis Santana. I live in the “nice” part of Washington Heights. He was killed in the “bad” or “not so nice” part of the neighborhood. I’m quoted in the article. I wish the reporter had quoted what I said when she asked me if I was surprised that Adonis had been murdered. I said, “Yes and no. Yes because he was a good kid. No because this is a violent country, as the events in Tucson show.”

Dana,
Congratulations on your new website. Good going.
Vitriol in politics didn't cause the Tucson shooting, although it increased it after the fact. The shooting was due to undetected and untreated mental illness. See my own editorial about this at http://www.psychodyssey.net/?page_id=1426.
Cheers,
Tom
